Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Bonneville Online School different from other virtual public schools?

Flexibility- Create your own unique, at-home learning environment. School where, when and how you decide. You and your mentor teacher can also create a schedule that works for your family.

Individualized Plan- BOES students are placed in a curriculum that considers academic level as well as grade level.  Students complete courses at a learning pace that meets the students' needs, including early promotion in a course.

Accountability-  Accountability includes choosing a curriculum that aligns with grade-level standards, taking state-required tests, and completing expected progress in the program, student's attendance is based on progress in their courses.

Where does instruction take place? Home, with you as the teacher, is where instruction and learning will take place. You will set the schedule, teach curriculum and provide instruction with the support of your mentor teacher.

What is the parent’s/guardian’s responsibility? The parent/guardian responsibility is to select curriculum (with our suggestions if needed), set-up daily schedule, provide direct instruction, and reach out to your mentor teacher for help.  Parent/guardians are teachers.

What is a mentor teacher? Mentor teachers at BOES are certified teachers that work with the families.  They can help you get started with your chosen curriculum, help plan students' daily schedule, brainstorm ideas to help if you student is struggling, monitor progress, and celebrate successes.  They are unable to deliver daily instruction.  Direct instruction is the responsibility of the parent/guardian.

How much time does learning take each day?  Depending on the age of the student, parents/guardians can expect to spend 2-5 hours per day with their child by monitoring and guiding them through the learning process.

What curriculum do I use? You can go two different directions with curriculum choices.  You can choose our online option, (Accelerate) that provides daily lesson plans and a daily schedule.  Your other choice would look more like a traditional home-school option where you choose your own curriculum. We are here to help you learn more about these options.

What are the time expectations for completing work? While there is a lot more flexibility with when you do your work, there are still requirements that need to be met to stay in compliance with District policy.  Our attendance is determined based on assignments submitted, plan on working several hours each day on you core subjects.  Checking in and staying in communication with your mentor teacher will be key to making sure that your student is staying on pace.
